The Oscar-nominated Andrew Garfield has addressed Amazon MGM Studios’ decision to abandon Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial, a film about OpenAI and Sam Altman. The actor admitted his feelings about the studio dropping a nearly finished project just as it made its financial ties with the tech company. Speaking while promoting his new film The Magic Faraway Tree, Garfield shared his perspective on the abrupt reversal.

“I was, and I wasn’t [surprised],” Garfield stated to Variety. The timing of Amazon’s withdrawal raised questions across the industry. The company had recently committed a $50 billion investment to OpenAI. Sam Altman had also attended Jeff Bezos’s wedding less than a year before the decision.

Garfield refused to criticise the studio’s conduct during Artificial’s production. “They were nothing but supportive and nothing but encouraging while we were making the film,” he said. He stressed that Guadagnino and he both maintained strong relationships with Amazon executives. Instead of airing grievances, he framed the split as a simple mismatch. “There are certain things that fit certain places and don’t fit other places,” Garfield explained. He expressed gratitude that the studio helped the film land where it truly belonged.

That destination turned out to be Neon. The independent distributor acquired the $40 million film after Amazon declared it would perform better elsewhere. Neon has since announced a full awards campaign targeting this year’s Oscar race. The Simon Rich-penned script traces the chaotic 2023 events surrounding Altman’s firing from OpenAI and his swift reinstatement.

Andrew Garfield leads a large cast. Monica Barbaro, Yura Borisov, Mark Rylance, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Schwartzman, Zosia Mamet, Cooper Hoffman, Chris O’Dowd, Cooper Koch, and Billie Lourd all feature in the film.

The actor took an unusual approach to preparation. He made no attempt to contact the real Altman. “I wouldn’t know how to. I don’t have his number. I don’t have his email,” Garfield admitted. He remained open to a future conversation. “I’d be very excited and curious to talk with him if he would ever want to do that.” Public records provided enough material for his performance.

Release date is yet to be announced.
