Billie is alive — but she and Joe Leaphorn are held captive by Irene Vaggan.

Irene Vaggan proves herself to be one of TV's weirdest villains.

Jim Chee is welcomed back into Diné culture.

It all comes down to this. The producers of Dark Winds have 50 minutes to wrap up everything about season 4 with the final episode, entitled "Ni' Hodisxǫs (The Glittering World.)"

Well, actually, they don't. They need to (and likely will) wrap most things up, but leave a few loose threads to keep us shouting "Aw, come on!" during the last scene. After all, a fifth season of the detective series based on Tony Hillerman's characters has already been approved by AMC. There's more Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon), Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon), and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) in store for those who are patient.

But first, a reminder as to where we let off. Chee was prepping for his medicine ceremony to rid himself of the ghost sickness he acquired when he entered Albert Gorman's death hogan. Manuelito promised to be there to help him through it.

And though it's nice she's there for her colleague and boyfriend, her mentor at the Navajo Tribal Police, the great Joe Leaphorn, could really use her right now. He's knocked out and in the trunk of Irene the German assassin's car.

Indeed, the first shot in episode 8 shows Leaphorn waking up hogtied, just in time to glimpse Irene Vaggan (Franka Potente) pumping her automobile full of knockout gas with him stuck inside. Not great!

Later, he wakes up to find Irene looming above him. He's strapped to a chair in her bunker. She has set the table for a meal and she looks… domesticated. Her fascination with Diné culture has short-circuited her brain and now she's in love with Leaphorn. It's very creepy.

Irene heads into the next room to bring him a surprise. She returns with Billie (Isabel DeRoy-Olson). She's alive! That’s good. But she looks beyond traumatized and the soundtrack booms with ominous, atonal sounds. That’s bad.

Irene straps Billie to a seat at the table and says it’s time to enjoy their "first meal together as a family."

Leaphorn makes it clear he's put everything together. Irene killed Leroy, got a patsy willing to lie at McNair's trial, replaced Leroy's photo at the Indian Center in L.A., then killed the only FBI contact that knew what the real Leroy looked like. Irene doesn't deny this (you are all the same to them, she says, implying that only she cares about the Diné), but says that if it were up to McNair, both Joe and Billie would be dead. They are only alive right now because of her. (Which has a degree of truth to it, I suppose.)

Irene convinces Billie to say a traditional blessing before they eat. Billie curses her out in Diné. Clearly, Irene understands she’s being razzed, as she gets up, puts on a gas mask, then blasts the room with knockout gas.

"We’re going to try this again tomorrow," she says.

A very dramatic way to say dinner is over!

Leaphorn then wakes up in a locked, cement room. He pokes around and finds some gauze in a bucket. Clearly, he's planning to MacGyver something, but it's hard to say what.

Later, he and Billie are tied to the dining room table again. Irene is annoyed, and says Joe has got everything he could want now — a woman and child. Why so serious? He asks for more water, then tells Billie that the jug has a charcoal filter, and he can use it. So when Irene returns, Billie deliberately spills something to make her exit. Leaphorn yanks the jug his way (despite being cuffed) and is able to put the filter packet down his pants. MacGyver action is indeed coming!

In the next scene, he's tearing up his bedsheets and planning something.

Oh, I get it now! He's created a kind of mask for himself. When Irene floods his room with gas, he huffs on what he's built, then pretends to be unconscious. What a guy. As she's yanking him out of the room, he springs into action!

Leaphorn knocks the German baddie down and she bashes her head on a crate (yay!) as he pulls keys from her pants pocket. He goes to free Billie, who is zonked out in the chair.

He wakes her up somehow and they head to the top of the bunker. After putzing with the keys for a long time (come on come onnnnn!!!!), he's finally got the latch open. Let's go! But wait, Billie isn't behind him anymore.

"Get down here or I’ll shoot her in the head right now!" Irene barks from below. (Womp, womp.)

Joe heads back downstairs and Irene looks… heartbroken.

"We're supposed to be together right now, you're ruining it!" she says.

Yeah, Irene's completely lost her marbles. This might ultimately be good for Joe and Billie, as he has previously established that someone this emotionally worked up is liable to make mistakes. He's just got to wait for the right time.

With Irene threatening Billie, Joe skulks back to his cement cell, but hears Irene torturing Billie in the next room. He freaks out, but is powerless to help.

Later, Irene puts some German opera on the hi-fi and once more "sets the table." Joe and Billie (who has some blood on her shirt) are deflated and dazed, while Irene demands an apology. Joe makes a blessing over the food (orange mush of some kind) and there is a moment of peace.

That evening, Irene comes to Joe in his sleep. Wearing only a bra (and her tan pants), she slinks up beside him. She tells him that when she was a kid, while Germany was at war, she used to read cowboy and Indian stories. Anyway, she blabs on and on for a bit, then slices each of their palms and presses them together.

"You made a promise to me now," she says. "This is our future now. The very first moment of the rest of our lives."

She starts licking Leaphorn's palms, and he is less than pleased.

In the morning, Irene's cooked a nice breakfast: pancakes and bacon with some OJ. Leaphorn starts talking about how Emma used to make breakfast for the family, when his son was still alive. Billie looks perplexed, but clearly Joe is working on Irene somehow, as Irene is hanging on his every word. When she asks if he will do an Indian blessing, he reaches out and takes her hand.

Suddenly, all three are out of the bunker (the plan is working so far!) and Joe says they need to pray facing east. He lights some brush and begins speaking in Diné (then English at Irene's request). At the end of the incantation, he reverts to Diné, cuing Billie to run. He throws the lit brush on a pool of spilled gas, which he saw from Irene's trunk days ago.

It ignites, and he and Billie book it. There's a huge explosion. Joe and Billie seem okay, but Irene's face is on fire. Hell yeah!

She rolls around and quickly stamps it out, but she can't be feeling too great right now. Meanwhile, Leaphorn and Billie try to climb Irene's fence. She starts shooting, though, so they hide behind some old trucks. Bille finds a dagger-shaped shard of glass and slams into Irene from behind. Then Leaphorn appears, knocks her down, and chokes her.

Irene's face looks like hamburger and even though she's done so much wrong, Joe Leaphorn cannot murder someone in cold blood! (Though he can leave them out to freeze and starve in the desert like he did seasons ago....)

Leaphorn lets her live.

"You are under arrest for murder," he says.

She smiles back, "You can't live without me."

Later, we find McNair in a more traditional prison visitation room, chained up. We hear a Link Wray-esque guitar chord as we cut to a close-up of Joe with a big smile on his face. McNair tries to play tough. He says the murder charges won't stick. Joe says he knows justice doesn't touch a guy like McNair, but he's not worried.

"You've already sent your best man — or best woman," notes Leaphorn.

Joe says that when McNair is free, all he needs to do is knock on his door to find him and say "yáʼátʼééh." He leaves, and McNair, now alone, gives a look like "Uh, maybe I should steer clear of the rez for a bit." He's going to continue his life of crime, but maybe Leaphorn has intimidated him just enough that he'll quit exploiting young, wayward Indians? We can hope!

Chee and Manuelito are waiting for Leaphorn outside the prison and as they saddle up we hear a folk-rock song that neither I nor Shazam could name. Jo goes home to put a picture of he and Emma in a frame, right near one of John F. Kennedy.

Meanwhile, Jim Chee gets all dressed up for his ceremony. He feels like he doesn't deserve it, but Manuelito says the traditions belong to him as much as anyone. Chee is a little down in the dumps, though, because other than Bernadette, no one has showed up. The old blind grandma calls him inside. Just as he does, Joe Leaphorn arrives with a truck full of firewood, followed by the whole gang. Everyone from the NTP plus folks from the rest of the rez, too.

"Sorry we're late!" someone shouts, unloading lawn chairs and (classic) a case of RC Cola.

Even FBI agent Shaw comes to the ceremony, as does Chee's old schoolteacher, Mrs. Swanson. He seems deeply touched. I'm gonna cry.

Also: Billie is there, prepping a food table, alongside her mother who has "decided to come home." Okay, I'm definitely going to cry.

Wait, who's that? Oh Lord, it's Emma Leaphorn, looking radiant. I am absolutely sobbing now. She goes to Chee and says she is honored to be there. Chee goes inside.

Is the episode over? No, there's actually a bunch more.

Next, we see Leaphorn tooling around in his garden as a truck approaches. It's Emma. She compliments him on the tomatoes he gave her, then says she's going "back home" to Los Angeles. Nodding, Joe says he's handing in his badge tomorrow, in an attempt to become a different man, for himself, not for her. She tells him to "sweat" on it before he does. He reminds her that the rez is her home, not Los Angeles, but accepts that she must go there — for now. They kiss, and are clearly forever bound, but she takes off. It's complicated!

After a break, Joe drives up to Sheriff Gordo Cena's (A Martinez) place. Gordo is prepping their fishing equipment for a quick trip. Joe sighs and realizes he's not sure if he can actually resign. Gordo admits that retirement is tough. He "can't stop the cop from spinning" in his head. Joe has a lot to think about.

Leaphorn's out on his horse, with all of Monument Valley behind him. He meets up with Chee, who says he feels "like a jackass." Chee regrets putting the NTP in danger, and apologizes, then says Bernadette will make a great lieutenant. He says that Shaw offered him a position in L.A. Joe says he doubts Jim will leave, and Jim says he doubts Joe will turn in his badge. They enter a teepee for a good sweat as Willie Nelson sings "These Are Difficult Times."

Later, we see Joe getting in uniform at home while the phone rings. Chee is outside his trailer looking at Shaw's business card. Bernadette pulls up to NTP HQ and enters to find Leaphorn on the phone. Ominous music plays. Something's not right.

"What's going on?" she asks.

Leaphorn replies: "Gordo Cena was murdered last night."

I did not see that one coming!

End of episode, end of season.

Tracks:

Is Cena's death tied to McNair, or is this a new mystery?

Will Leaphorn still retire, or will he personally avenge his pal? (I think we know the answer to this.)

Will Chee stay on the rez to help Leaphorn? (I think we know the answer to this, too.)

Will Manuelito split because her promotion has been delayed, or will she help her mentor and colleague/lover? (And we certainly know the answer to this one as well.)

Will we be able to wait until season 5 of Dark Winds? (We're gonna have to!)
