Oscar-winning actor Glen Hansard was killed in a tragic motorcycle crash Wednesday at age 56.

The fatal single-vehicle crash happened at the Strawberry Beds in West Dublin just before 4:30 a.m., according to the Irish Times. An Garda Síochána, the national police service of Ireland, confirmed that someone had died as a result of the crash but did not disclose the individual's identity.

Hansard's talent agency, ATC Management confirmed his death in a statement that read in part, "With broken hearts we announce the passing of Glen Hansard in the early hours of this morning." They requested privacy on behalf of the actor's grieving family.

Garda reported that "The motorcyclist, a man in his 50s, was treated at the scene but was pronounced deceased a short time later," according to the Irish Times.

They went on to say that "The scene has been preserved for examination by Garda forensic collision investigators," and local traffic was diverted as a result.

Hansard won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2008 for "Falling Slowly," which he co-wrote with Markéta Irglová for the film "Once." He played Outspan Foster in "The Commitments," while simultaneously pursuing his music career.

In 1990, Hansard formed the alternative rock band The Frames, and released six studio albums with the band, gaining widespread success in Ireland. He released his solo album "Rhythm and Repose," in 2012, and was nominated for the Grammy for best folk album for his 2015 release, "Didn't He Ramble."

He is survived by his wife, Maire Saaritsa, and their 3-year-old son, Christy.
