Tottenham concluded their tour Down Under with a 2-1 victory over London rivals Chelsea at Accor Stadium in Sydney.
Sandro Tonali put Tottenham in front with a deflected effort before Estevao equalised for Chelsea minutes later. Tottenham’s cause was not helped by a red card for Austrian defender Kevin Danso, who lasted just three minutes after coming on at half-time.
After making a mistake, Danso brought Joao Pedro down and was given his marching orders for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Chelsea came close to taking the lead with the man advantage only for Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky to make some crucial saves.Just as the game appeared to be heading to penalties, Richarlison scored on the follow-up after Jamie Donley hit the post in the final few seconds of added time.
Tottenham will take on Getafe and Hoffenheim back on home soil before taking on Brentford on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season.
Chelsea have four more pre-season games, including fixtures against Juventus and AC Milan, before travelling to Fulham in the opening Premier League game of the Xabi Alonso era.

It would have been a touch soft to give a free-kick to Tottenham but in the Premier League you suspect Tonali would have been awarded a free-kick there.

Danso is shown a red card as Davies was probably not going to get across in time and it was the denial of a goal-scoring opportunity. Why do that in a pre-season friendly? Stupid.

Penalty or no penalty?
It appears the more times you see the incident involving Wesley Fofana and Conor Gallagher right at the end of the first half the more it looks like a penalty. Fofana did not appear to get the ball and instead catches Gallagher so Tottenham can probably feel a little aggrieved not to be given a penalty.

Should Tottenham have been awarded a penalty? Robertson whips the ball in from the left to pick out the run of Gallagher into the box. Gallagher appeared to get to the ball ahead of Fofana, who seemingly then took Gallagher out but the referee does not point to the spot. That was a risky challenge to say the least from Fofana and on first viewing probably should have result in a penalty.

Like London buses, two goals come in quick succession and Chelsea are back on level terms. Chelsea counter from deep inside their own half and the ball ends up with Gittens on the left. From the corner of the box, he crosses towards the far post. It takes a touch off a Tottenham defender and ends up at the back post where Estevao, one of the smallest men on the pitch, beats Robertson and heads into the opposite corner.

Tottenham take the lead in Sydney courtesy of £100m signing Tonali. Solomon lays it back to Tonali who, from just outside the box, hits it first time and his shot takes a big deflection off Colwill, taking it into the far corner and giving Sharman-Lowe in the Chelsea goal no chance. That was probably Tottenham’s first proper foray forward in the game.

Pedro is caught by Van Hecke out on Chelsea left and the latter is absolutely furious with that decision, believing he got the ball. However, replays show that he did not get the ball and a free-kick was the right decision. Those two were teammates at Brighton and supposedly were involved in a training ground altercation just over a year ago!
The free-kick is whipped in towards the back post and the last touch is deemed to have come off Chelsea, much to their chagrin.

Mykhailo Mudryk free to play for Chelsea after doping appeal
Mykhailo Mudryk, the Chelsea winger, has been cleared to return to competitive football with immediate effect after the anti-doping case against him was resolved.
Mudryk has not played for Chelsea since November 2024 after he tested positive for meldonium, a banned substance.
The Ukrainian has consistently insisted that he never knowingly used the substance and that he did not understand how it had entered his system.

Chelsea hit with £10m fine but avoid points deduction for illegal payments
Chelsea have avoided a points deduction for making off-the-books payments during the Roman Abramovich era, but have been fined £10m and given a suspended two-window ban on signing players.
Chelsea’s punishment follows an investigation into 74 alleged breaches of the Football Association’s regulations regarding agent, intermediary and third-party payments.
It has now been revealed that Chelsea were initially punished with a six-point deduction, suspended until June 2027, but successfully appealed against that sanction.

London derby in Sydney
It is a Premier League encounter Down Under as Chelsea take on Tottenham at the 82,000-capacity Accor Stadium in Sydney. Chelsea won both meetings in the league last season, winning 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before a 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge in the final few weeks of last season.
It is the start of a new era at Chelsea, with former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso taking over. They began their tour down under with a crazy 6-4 win over Sydney Wanderers, with Joao Pedro scoring a hat-trick. Chelsea have broken the British transfer record to bring in Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. Rogers is not on this tour as he enjoys time off following England’s World Cup exploits, with the likes of Reece James, Enzo Fernandez and Malo Gusto also not involved.

It has been a busy week for the club off the pitch as they secured the signing of French centre-back from Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace and are closing in on deals for both Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson. Chelsea’s opening game of the new Premier League season will be a west London derby as they travel to Craven Cottage to take on Fulham.
Tottenham have already played two games on their tour down under. A 2-0 win over Auckland FC in New Zealand was followed up by a 1-1 draw against Sydney FC on Wednesday. Tottenham have been very active in the transfer market this summer. In particular they have targeted Premier League players including Andy Robertson, Sandro Tonali and Jan Paul van Hecke. Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons, Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert have remained in the UK as they continue their rehabilitation from injuries.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has also stayed at home with a minor knock but the Italian has been linked with a move away from Tottenham this summer. They begin their Premier League campaign with a London derby as they take on Brentford at the Gtech on the opening weekend.
