Sandra Oh’s character, Christina Yang, was a fan favorite in Grey’s Anatomy for a reason. The actress immortalized the role with her honest and spectacular performance before exiting the show in season 10. Recently, she recalled deciding to quit the show “on her own terms” due to creative exhaustion.
During her latest appearance on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s podcast, Dinner’s On Me, she remembered how the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, asked her about her decision surrounding her character while the star cast was seated for a renegotiation.
Sandra Oh Recalls Quitting Grey’s Anatomy
Sandra told the host, “When it came to the end of Season 8, or 9, Rhimes took me aside because we were all renegotiating, and she goes, ‘What do you want to do? I said, ‘Let me think about it.’ And I really, really thought about it.”
The Killing Eve star hinted that she had reached a creative saturation while essaying the character for almost 10 years, which led her to decide to exit the show in its tenth season. However, she felt privileged to have had the opportunity to exit on her own terms, allowing the writers to craft an apt ending for her character.
Sandra Oh departed Grey’s Anatomy in May 2014 at the conclusion of season 10. Her character, Dr. Cristina Yang, was written off to head a medical research institute in Zurich, Switzerland.
Sandra Spoke About Creative Exhaustion With The Character
Talking about her decision, Sandra revealed to Ferguson, “The creative being will dictate, and you got to follow it. You got to ask it, ‘What do you want to do? What should I do?’ I felt very much like I did my job. I really did my job. I feel like I created a full character. I feel I grew the character in 10 years time, where it’s a believable growth.”

She further said, “People grow in 10 years, and I think she really did grow. The privilege was to actually plan an exit and for all the writers to be able to plan the exit to support that. And I know that it is extremely rare to have. So, that was a real, real gift.”
However, in the same podcast, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of Grey’s Anatomy alongside a stellar cast that included Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, Katherine Heigl, Chandra Wilson, and the late Eric Dane.
The Chair actress admitted to the Modern Family star that she realized the strong impact her character, Christina Yang, had on viewers only after she left the show.
Sandra Oh said, “You realize that something happened and you can only get that after years. Where it’s like, ‘Oh, here it is. My friends watch it with their 11-year-old kid because it’s like, that’s their show. That’s their show. And that means something.’ I feel like it’s still happening, the reverberations of Grey’s Anatomy and the character of Cristina. I did not have the quality or the depth of gratitude while you’re going through it, as I do now.”
