UEFA countries threatened to boycott future World Cups if FIFA president Gianni Infantino goes forward with his plans to offload stakes in the quadrennial tournament to private investors.

In an attempt to build on the success of this year's World Cup, FIFA is looking to sell a $20 billion minority stake in a newly established commercial venture. The sanctioning body is currently in discussions with JP Morgan to raise billions of dollars by offloading roughly 20% of the new entity to outside investors.

According to The Times, technology investor Joshua Kushner — whose older brother Jared Kushner is married to President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump — is reportedly in talks to spearhead the deal through his Thrive Eternal fund. One source indicates that proceeds from the transaction would be channeled by the nonprofit back to its national member associations, providing greater financial resources.

Upon discovering FIFA's plans to sell off a minority share, UEFA swiftly condemned the move during an emergency virtual meeting of the organization's 55 member nations.

During the conference, which was led by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, the members unanimously agreed to boycott FIFA's tournaments if Infantino allowed private investors to purchase stakes in the World Cup.
