**This article contains spoilers from *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* episode 3, "The Squire."**

Dexter Sol Ansell, the young star of *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms*, can finally talk about who his character really is after a revealing end to the third episode of the *Game of Thrones* prequel. It's the moment readers of George R. R. Martin's novellas have been waiting for.

"Egg" is short for Aegon, as in Prince Aegon V Targaryen.

"It feels cool. Feels like I'm a dragon," Ansell tells ** of the reveal. "I just wanna jump out my window and go 'wee!' and breathe fire. Yeah, it feels exciting to be a Targaryen. I mean, I don't know much about *Game of Thrones* because I've never watched it, but I think Targaryen's the best house, in my opinion."

Dunk (Peter Claffey) first met the diminutive, bald-headed boy on the road to the Ashford tourney, reluctantly taking him on as a squire. Egg blows his own cover with the concluding minutes of this week's episode, aptly named "The Squire."

Dunk intervenes when the cruel Prince Aerion (Finn Bennett) attacks the puppet troupe and breaks Tanselle's (Tanzyn Crawford) hand for depicting the death of a dragon during a performance. To save his aspiring hedge knight from execution, Egg reveals himself as the younger brother of Aerion and the son of Prince Maekar (Sam Spruell) — the child who went missing off camera, as mentioned when the royal procession arrived at Ashford.

"When I was reading the scripts and looking into it, I found out that I was gonna be a Targaryen, and my first thought was, 'Who's a Targaryen? What's a Targaryen? What's this random name?'" Ansell recalls. "Then my parents told me everything. It was really cool to find out that I was a royal."

He wasn't too surprised about the reveal, simply because the British child star, as an 11-year-old, hasn't been keeping up with the often R-rated TV world of Westeros. "I was definitely less excited than all my family," Ansell adds, "because they were like, 'You're a Targaryen? What?! No way.'"

The actor, also known for playing President Snow as a child in *The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes*, often played chess with Bennett (as well as other cast members) to feel more like brothers. He also remembers the particular night shoot when they filmed the Egg/Aegon reveal.

Sarah Adina Smith, the director of episode 3, plied Ansell with gummy worms to keep him awake — specifically Twin Snakes gummy worms. The sour ones are his personal favorites.

"She's telling me all these notes to do in the scene, and then I'm like, 'I think I need a gummy worm,'" Ansell says. "So she hands me the gummy worm, and then I've got it in my mouth, and then they go, 'Rolling! And...Action!' Fire explodes, bombs, people rushing, thousands of smallfolk. Bash! Bash! Bash! And I'm standing there going, 'I still have got a gummy worm in my mouth!'"

In many ways, the story really begins here. Ansell speaks with EW after a day of shooting *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* season 2, which adapts Martin's second novella in the Dunk and Egg saga, "The Sworn Sword." The plan is to adapt all three stories, as well as additional tales Martin outlined for showrunner Ira Parker, but it's difficult to talk about any of that without first acknowledging the lineage of one of its two lead characters.

Teasing the remainder of season 1, Ansell says, "All the *Game of Thrones* fans who love the proper violent bits and all that kind of stuff, you've got your fight. It's a complete rollercoaster from battling to crying from people dying."

As for Egg's tall companion, despite the intervention, there's bound to be some consequences for Dunk punching a Targaryen prince, even if it was in defense of another.

"Dunk doesn't really like Egg at this point," Ansell continues. "So he's quite mad with him. He hates him at this point. Egg doesn't know what to do. He knew this day would come, but he's upset. He thinks he's never gonna be with Dunk ever again, and he thinks he's lost his only chance and he's gonna have to go back with the Targaryens now and he's gonna be kept away so he never escapes again."

Something tells us that's not gonna happen.

New episodes of *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* arrive Wednesday nights on HBO and HBO Max.**
